Meet Mr. Karun Duggal, the driving force behind Dwarka Chess Academy

A Journey of Dedication, Performance & Achievement

Mr. Karun Duggal is a highly respected name in the Indian chess community, with over 30 years of experience in competitive chess and coaching. A former National Champion, he has dedicated his life to developing young talent, mentoring aspiring players, and shaping future champions through the power of chess.

Throughout his illustrious coaching journey, Mr. Duggal has trained more than 50 State Champions, while over 70 of his students have earned official FIDE ratings. For the past 20 years, he has proudly served as the Official Coach of Delhi University, guiding generations of players and helping them reach their full potential both on and off the chessboard.

With a current FIDE Rating of 1994, Mr. Duggal continues to remain actively involved in competitive chess. Adding another milestone to his remarkable journey, he is set to represent himself at the FIDE World Senior Chess Championships 2026, scheduled to be held in November 2026.

Beyond competitive chess and professional coaching, Mr. Duggal has always believed in giving back to society. He has been teaching chess free of cost to children from economically weaker sections (EWS), providing talented young minds with access to quality chess education and an opportunity to pursue their dreams.

His coaching legacy is reflected in the achievements of his students. Most recently, one of his students secured 1st Position in the SGFI National Under-17 Boys Championship (2024–25), adding yet another prestigious accomplishment to his coaching journey.

At Dwarka Chess Academy, we carry forward Mr. Duggal’s vision of balancing sports with academics. Our aim is not only to develop stronger chess players, but also to help children become confident, disciplined, focused, and successful individuals in life.

We help our students by analyzing their tournament games on a regular basis and thus helping them understand their shortcomings

We have ample chess clocks, international standard chess sets and digital tools for every student

Tournament support

Our coaches also offer support by holding special preparatory sessions and camps in advance for important tournaments.

We also conduct practical training sessions where only FIDE rated Coaches and playing partners play with our students

Atanu Lahiri

International Master

Atanu sir is a renowned chess personality. He has produced many Grandmasters and International masters from all over India. Atanu sir is an International master of chess. He has also mentored the chess players from five countries. A certified FIDE trainer and Commonwealth gold medalist with peak rating of 2394 ELO.

Gurpreet Pal Singh

Senior Coach

Gurpreet sir is a former sub junior national chess champion of India and Government of India Awardee chess coach. He has been the coach of Grandmaster Sahaj Grover who became Under-10 World Chess Champion! He has been Delhi state chess champion for many years. He is a candidate master in chess with peak FIDE rating of 2360 ELO.

Chandan Mandal

Senior Coach

Chandan Sir has been one of the most successful coach from our academy. He himself was Under-25 Uttar Pradesh state Chess Champion. He has produced more than 15 state chess champions from Delhi NCR!!! Chess coach of Bal Bharti School Delhi, Chandan sir has been a guiding spirit for GM Aryan Chopra & 2300 + rated Candidate master Garv Gaur from Haryana.
